The cheapest hotels are around train stations, but the nice area to stay is Sakae, about 3.5 km east from main station. A nice cheaper place is Nagoya Youth Hostel, it's placed about 5km east of the city centre. In an excelent location is placed Tokyu Inn, in the Sakae area, www.tokyuhotels.co.jp, look at this address for the prices and booking.
